Collectible vintage FUKAGAWA Japanese Porcelain sewing thimble featuring a hand-painted BUTTERFLY on the front of the thimble. The butterfly is painted in blue, green, yellow and red with gold metallic accents and a hand-painted gold band along the base of the thimble. This fine Japanese porcelain thimble may have been issued from the Thimble Collectors Club series.
Inside of the this porcelain thimble is the mark of the Fukagawa (Fuka means mountain and gawa means river) Porcelain Manufacturing Company, founded in 1894. In 1894 one of the Fukagawa brothers who in 1894 run Koransha had been studying ceramic design with the most famous studio potter in Japan, Makuzu Kozan, and wanted to expand sales to foreign markets. He founded the Fukagawa Porcelain Manufacturing Company and then went on studying European porcelain in an effort to understand the Western taste. The company still exists and are run by a new generation of the Fukagawa family.
This bright & cheerful collectible thimble is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. It measures 1" x 7/8" and is marked FUKAGAWA PORCELAIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY in blue with the Fukagawa Porcelain Mfg. Co. logo. This would make an excellent addition to your thimble collection or to a Japanese porcelain collection.
