Unique and authentic Troyan Bulgarian ceramic pottery tea set with a matching teapot, lidded sugar bowl and creamer milk pitcher featuring traditional Troyan design in a dark cream / tan colored background with dark brown, tan, blue, white and green colors with dark chocolate brown trim, traditional colors which represent a peacock.
Each piece of Troyan ceramic pottery is hand formed from red clay, which is indigenous to the Troyan area. The artisans achieve their designs by using an intricate method of dropping underglazes in dot and line patterns, then quickly pulling these underglazes through with a pin.
The main center of ceramic production is the city of Troyan, and Troyan ceramics are considered the “true” Bulgarian pottery. Troyan is a small town in North Bulgaria located on the banks of the Beli Ossam River in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains.
The pottery style practiced today began in the 19th century based on Slavic and Thracian patterns. The terra cotta clay from the region has a distinct red color that turns Bulgarian pottery into a deep reddish brown once fired. Local artisans applied yellow, brown and green paint with a bull's horns and feathers to achieve a peacock or butterfly like design or smeared paint with their fingertips to achieve a raindrop like effect.
This vintage Troyan ceramic pottery teapot measures 9" from the tip of the spout to the outside edge of the handle, is 6.5" in diameter, stands 6.5" tall at the top of the teapot lid knob and weighs 1 pound, 14.6 ounces. The teapot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing noted.
The matching lidded sugar bowl measures 3.75" in diameter, stands 4.5" tall at the knob of the lid and weighs 11.9 ounces. This Troyan lidded sugar bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or other damage to note.
And the matching Troyan creamer milk pitcher measures 3" in dialer, 4" to the outside edge of the handle, stands 3.75" tall and weighs 7.4 ounces.
